ACD 12/16/14: An Unusual AKI
Thanks to Dr. Aneet Kaur for a nice case and a nice review of the final diagnosis. Can you diagnose this case before she gives it away?
General Review of AKI:
I looked for the best reviews I could find on acute kidney injury and a found a few good ones.
Here is a pdf Lancet article on AKI (probably will need to be on campus for this link)
Here is a pdf of a very short book chapter with lots of nice graphs and figures.
As a free bonus, here is a pdf of the chapter on potassium metabolism disorders.
Urinary Eosinophils:
We had an interesting discussion of urinary eosinophils. There are tons of articles and opinion pieces on this subject. I linked a few of them here for those who want to read more:
Here's a nice post from a fellow blogspot blogger called The Renal Fellow Network: The End of the Road for Urinary Eosinophils? The blog post discusses the article "Utility of urine eosinophils in the diagnosis of acute interstitial nephritis. -Clin J Am Soc Nephrol."
Some background from the Medical Laboratory Observer
I don't normally link to uptodate articles, because they are easy to find yourself. But this is a super quick, concise article about the usefulness of urinary eosinophils. And Dr. Corwin's original article on the subject from 1985 is in the references.
The diagnosis in this case:
Here is a very concise review of the diagnosis in this case from a surgery textbook and a more in depth review from a critical care journal.
